98% of all ABN registered in Australia belong to Small Business owners. With 93% turning over less than $2 Million each year. In terms of percentages of business ownership, just shy of 60% of people who own small businesses in Australia are aged 45 years and older.

Compared to younger business owners, the over 45s did not grow up with any technology. We (yes, I put myself in this bracket) didn’t have computer access at school and needed to learn everything we’ve picked up about digitisation on the fly.

As a result, many of my clients and community who identify in this age group feel the digital revolution has happened to them, leaving them overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.

During my years of digital coaching as a Federal Government small business advisory (ASBAS), I noticed time and again the ‘presumed’ knowledge that was frustrating many business owners. Consequently, I spend a considerable amount of my training sessions concentrating on the foundational work to bring communities to a level digital playing field.

The digital divide is real. It’s getting bigger, severely impacting our regional small business communities in particular.

In 2021 an NBN Co survey showed that close to half (49%) of Australians had increased their online shopping habits, and 70% were seeking out local small business operators to support… great news, I hear you say

But, (there’s always a but!) more than ⅔ of the respondents said a lack of digital presence by local small businesses prevented them from supporting business owners.
